Utah woman run down in DUI car accident

On Behalf of | Sep 4, 2013 | DUI

A Utah man had been drinking at a party he attended in the nighttime hours of Saturday, Aug. 24 and the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 25. While still at the party, the man was given a citation for disorderly conduct and being intoxicated. He was not charged with DUI since he was not driving at the time. A friend drove him home, but the man somehow ended up behind the wheel of a vehicle and ended up killing a woman in a car accident.

A woman was sitting next to a parked car on a curb having a cigarette when the man drove across the center line into the oncoming lanes of traffic, hit the parked car and then the woman. The vehicle then continued on to go through a fence and run into a building. A witness that lives in the area where the crash occurred said he came out of his home when he heard the noise to see the man trying to get driving again. When the occupant of the home he hit confronted him, the man ran away leaving the vehicle behind.

Police later found the man after nearly 30 minutes of searching with a K-9 unit. He was taken into custody and his bail has been set at $500,000. The woman that he hit was taken to an area hospital, but her injuries were too great and she died as a result of them.

It is unfortunate that the driver made the poor decision to get behind the wheel of a car after he had already been cited by police for drinking. Now, a family has lost a loved one in this DUI car accident, and nothing is going to be able to fix that. Even the fact that the family has the right under Utah law to file a wrongful death claim against the driver to recover the financial losses they have incurred won’t erase they mistake made by this man.
