UHP beefs up DUI patrols during 100 deadliest days of summer

On Behalf of | Jun 6, 2014 | DUI

Memorial Day weekend marked the beginning of what the Utah Highway Patrol likes to call the 100 deadliest days of summer. It is estimated from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, as many as 96 people will die on the state’s roadways. In an effort to reduce that number, extra DUI patrols could become a fixture — at least during those 100 days.

The Utah Highway Patrol was hoping to be able to report that no one was killed over the Memorial Day holiday, but two people lost their lives in the first four days of the summer season. In addition to drunk driving, authorities are also looking for drivers who are sleepy, speeding or distracted. People could also be ticketed for not wearing their seat belts.

So far, somewhere around 7,000 traffic stops have been made. Over 3,700 of those stops were reportedly initiated because of speeding. Hundreds of tickets were written to drivers for not being properly restrained. Fifty-six drivers face charges of driving under the influence of either drugs or alcohol, and another 43 people were taken into custody for some other alcohol-related accusation.

Fortunately, just because someone is arrested for DUI does not mean that he or she is guilty. Everyone has the opportunity to refute the charges in court after examining the evidence that prosecutors intend to present. Dealing with drunk driving charges can be frightening and the penalties for conviction harsh, depending on the circumstances. It may be beneficial to know what an individual’s rights are and have assistance in dealing with the courts in order to seek the best possible outcome.
