DUI suspected in parking lot crash that injured pedestrian

On Behalf of | Nov 13, 2015 | DUI

Video in the parking lot of a Sam’s Club here in Utah captured a vehicle striking a pedestrian. The driver attempted to leave the scene, but was prevented by other people in the parking lot. As police conducted their investigation into the accident, they began to suspect the driver of DUI.

Witnesses reported to police that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit the woman and a pole, and surveillance video appears to corroborate their accounts. The video shows her shopping cart rolling away from her untouched, which is fortunate because there was a child in it at the time of the crash. The man is also seen getting out of his vehicle to inspect the damage before he attempted to drive away.

The 66-year-old man was arrested because police in Provo, which is where the incident occurred, suspect him of driving under the influence. According to the accompanying video, officers did not suspect the man of being intoxicated. Therefore, the results of testing are pending to determine whether he was on drugs, and if so, what kind. Allegedly, the man did not have insurance or a valid registration for the vehicle on his person or in the vehicle, and he was cited for those violations as well.

The Utah man has likely engaged the assistance of an attorney to advocate on his behalf as the case heads to court. He and his criminal defense counsel will have the opportunity to review the video, witness statements and any other evidence gathered by officials that may be presented in court. After that, all of the options available to the man in connection with the DUI-related accusations will be reviewed and a plan of action designed to achieve the best possible result put into effect.
