Driver in wrong-way crash suspected of DUI

On Behalf of | Dec 10, 2015 | DUI

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, a three-car accident occurred at around 4:20 p.m. on Dec. 2. One of the drivers somehow ended up heading south in the northbound lanes. Troopers believe that driver was impaired at the time and expect he will be investigated for DUI and driving the wrong direction on the roadway.

The accident occurred on Interstate 215. Somehow, the driver, who was heading south, ended up entering onto the northbound side of the highway off Parley’s Canyon. It did not take long before the wrong-way vehicle collided nearly head-on with another vehicle. It then hit one more vehicle before coming to rest.

Emergency responders had to cut the 41-year-old out of the wreckage that used to be his vehicle. He was then rushed to a hospital in the area with severe injuries. At last report, his condition was upgraded from critical to serious. His recovery could take some time. No report was provided regarding the condition of the other individuals involved in the crash.

Before the suspicion of DUI becomes a charge of DUI, additional investigation may be necessary. Then, Utah prosecutors will have to prove to the court beyond a reasonable doubt that he is guilty. There may be other charges associated with the accident, but this man’s past alcohol-related convictions could complicate matters should he be found guilty with regard to any new charges. It would be in his best interest to seek the advice and assistance of counsel as quickly as possible. Every aspect of the case will need to be reviewed to ensure that this man’s rights are protected.
