Recently, police responded to reports of a single car accident near Dixie State University here in Utah. Upon arrival, they discovered a wrecked car and its driver. The driver allegedly fled the scene and, upon his capture, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and other charges.
Reports indicate that the vehicle allegedly failed to stop at two stop signs before it crashed into a fence. When police attempted to question the driver, he supposedly jumped over the fence and fled. He was apprehended and brought back to the scene. The officer who chased the man reported that the man was not running straight and kept tripping.
It allegedly took two officers to put the 25-year-old into handcuffs because his movements were erratic, was unsteady on his feet and did not listen to instructions. He was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center to be evaluated for injuries. Once cleared by medical personnel, he was transported to the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility.
He was booked on suspicion of reckless driving, fleeing the scene of an accident and driving under the influence. Other charges include possession of drug paraphernalia and drugs, disobeying a command from police and interfering with his own arrest. It should be noted that he had not been officially charged with these offenses at last report.
Utah prosecutors will need to review the evidence and statements to determine whether the DUI and other charges are appropriate. The driver will want to engage criminal defense counsel as quickly as possible to protect his rights as the case moves forward. As the proceedings move forward, his counsel will already be aware of the circumstances and can begin formulating a defense.
