Utah couples can experience complex divorce, like Michael Moore

On Behalf of | Jul 26, 2013 | Divorce

Utah readers likely know that any marriage can sustain a breakdown, including those of celebrities and other well-known individuals. After 21 years of marriage, well-known documentary filmmaker Michael Moore and his wife Kathleen have announced that they have filed for divorce. According to a recent report, the couple has stated that their marriage has broken down without the likelihood of being preserved.

Married in 1991, they reportedly have no children but do have substantial assets. Reports indicate that the couple is no longer living at the same residence, but have not disclosed how they intend to divide the assets. So far, a temporary order has been sign, preventing both spouses from transferring or selling their assets to other parties.

It is unclear whether the couple signed a prenuptial agreement. Known assets held by the couple include stocks, bonds and real estate. Household furnishings, limited liability companies and fine art pieces are also included among their possessions. With Moore’s successful films — including Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11 — it is likely that the couple’s assets are substantial and complex.

While many Utah couples will not have the high-value and complex assets of many celebrities, even couples with moderate assets can face difficult issues during divorce. Having a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement in place can help protect many couples. However, perhaps the best way to manage a divorce is having the right system of support in place. Even well protected couples can experience the emotional and financial challenges that often accompany divorce, but these challenges can be overcome to achieve a fair and comprehensive divorce settlement.
