Jeremy Renner’s divorce is taking unexpected turns

On Behalf of | Jan 8, 2015 | Divorce

Utah fans of Jeremy Renner, whose claim to fame includes the hit movies “The Avengers” and “Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol,” might be aware that he and his wife of 10 months are parting ways. The couple has a prenuptial agreement, but Sonni Pacheco, a model who recently started in “The Wingman,” asserts in court documents that it is fraudulent. This is only the beginning of the twists and turns that could make their divorce contentious.

A primary reason that couples execute prenuptial agreements is to avoid costly and contentious court battles. If Renner and Pacheco’s prenup is rendered null and void by a court, the parties could find themselves facing a long battle. Pacheco is acting as if the court has already ruled.

She is requesting spousal support and custody of the couple’s child. She also wants Renner to pay her rent during the proceedings, allow her use of a vehicle and to pay for her to move out of the marital home when she decides to do so. Supposedly, Renner is also in possession of her Social Security card, birth certificate and passport. She is demanding he return them.

The first issue the court will most likely need to resolve is whether the prenuptial agreement is valid. How the court rules on this issue could shape the remainder of the divorce proceedings. It is unknown when the parties are expected to be in court.

The issues in Renner’s divorce are the same ones that many Utah couples face in their own proceedings. What might make his situation unusual is that the parties’ divorce was supposed to be governed by their prenuptial agreement. The media seems to be filled with stories of spouses challenging the validity of a prenup at the beginning of their divorces. Couples wanting to use such an agreement to avoid a contentious divorce may benefit by taking these stories as a warning to be sure their agreements are properly negotiated, drafted and executed to help ensure they are not ruled null and void if and when they are needed.
