Enjoying the holidays during or after a divorce is possible

As the holiday season begins, some Utah families are struggling with how they will enjoy them now that the parents are no longer together. For couples who are going through a divorce, this can be an especially stressful time of year since it might feel as if life is in chaos. Fortunately, it is possible to enjoy the holidays and could actually be a blessing in disguise.

Utah couples who are going through a divorce at this time of year have the opportunity to see if the plans they have in their minds are as practical in reality. For those who have not yet been through the holidays, this is a good time to determine whether the provisions made at the time of the divorce make sense in practice. In either case, the holiday schedule needs to be discussed and posted so that everyone is aware of it.

Building in some flexibility into a parenting plan can allow for unforeseen visitors or events that can occur during the holidays. Even if an opportunity to go out of town occurs during one parent's scheduled visitation, it would be a good idea to give the other parent as much notice as possible to ensure that everyone is in agreement. In most cases, a parent cannot take the children out of state without the permission of the other.

It is not necessary to attempt to continue traditions begun during the marriage after the divorce. Where it is true that more Utah families are continuing to spend the holidays together despite a divorce, it is not a requirement. New traditions can be started to go along with the family's new situation. If disputes cannot be resolved, the parties have the option to go back to court for help in resolving the matter.
