Ending a marriage is not typically an easy decision to make. Most people in Utah and across the country give the idea a great deal of thought before deciding to move forward with this life-changing process. If children are involved, the decision can be even more difficult, and in some cases, obtaining child support can be as well.
It may come as a surprise to some that child support is not as readily obtained by custodial parents as some might think. While statistics from 2018 indicate that five out of six custodial parents are mothers, only about half of those mothers receive child support. When it comes to custodial fathers, only approximately 30% receive this type of support payment.
Additionally, even with support orders handed down by the court, most custodial parents do not receive the full amount of support owed to them. In fact, over 30% of child support payments go unpaid completely, and less than half of payments are made in full. As a result, it is likely no surprise that many divorced parents struggle financially when trying to raise their children.
If Utah residents are having a hard time getting the child support payments they deserve, they may not know what their options are. In some cases, parents may have reason to take their cases back to court in order to have the support order enforced or to seek modifications.
