Preparing to divorce a narcissist

On Behalf of | Jun 9, 2020 | Divorce

When starting a relationship, most people want to present their best selves. Once individuals get used to each other, more of their relaxed and true personality may start to show. For some, a person’s true colors may not show themselves until after marriage, and it is not always a good thing. In fact, many Utah residents find themselves heading toward divorce after realizing they married a narcissist.

Narcissists can often make their spouses feel as if they have little worth and are always wrong. As a result, this can put a tremendous strain on a relationship, which is why such marriages commonly come to an end. Of course, divorcing narcissists can be difficult because they still maintain the attitude that their spouse is wrong and will do whatever they can to maintain control over the process.

Unfortunately, this control likely played a substantial role in the marriage, and as a result, a spouse may have little information regarding the household finances because the narcissist likely took control. If this is the case, it is important that the spouse gain as much information and documentation about the finances and other household matters as possible. Without this knowledge, property division proceedings and other aspects of the divorce case will be much more difficult.

Though it is tempting to let emotions take control during an overwhelming situation like divorce, it is important to remain logical. A narcissist will likely try to provoke emotional outbursts from a spouse or have them him or herself, so remaining level headed is wise. It is also worthwhile for Utah residents who anticipate a difficult dissolution process to consider working with experienced attorneys to help them through their cases.
