Driver facing charges for DUI after rollover accident on I-80

Troopers with the Utah Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene of a single-car accident in Interstate 80 on a recent Saturday that occurred at approximately 5:17 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered two seriously injured individuals, and one person who suffered only minor injuries. By the next morning, the driver found herself facing charges for DUI, among other accusations.

Preliminary reports from the Utah Highway Patrol indicate that the vehicle drifted onto the shoulder of the eastbound side of the Interstate. The driver attempted to get the vehicle back onto the road, but she over-corrected. The vehicle ended up flipping onto its roof in the median, which is where it came to rest.

The back seat passenger was apparently not wearing a seat belt and appeared to be part way out of the vehicle when emergency responders arrived. She suffered critical injuries and, at last report, remained hospitalized in critical condition. The front seat passenger also suffered serious injuries, but she was subsequently upgraded to stable. The driver was fortunate enough to walk away with only minor injuries.

The driver is undoubtedly shaken up over the accident and is concerned about her friends. Nevertheless, troopers say that the 25-year-old driver was impaired at the time of the accident. They also claim to have found drug paraphernalia in her possession, which is why she is not only facing charges for DUI. The charges against her could affect every aspect of her life should a criminal conviction be secured against her. However, before any legal penalties can be assessed against her, prosecutors will be required to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she committed one or more of the crimes with which she has been charged.
