Help is available for Utah drivers to avoid a DUI on a holiday

On Behalf of | May 5, 2014 | DUI

The holidays are filled with celebrations, and many of the parties that Utah residents attend provide an opportunity to enjoy alcoholic beverages. As most everyone knows, it can be easy to have too much to drink at these types of celebrations, and that increases the risk of someone driving drunk. In recent years, some organizations provide their services free of charge to partygoers to ensure they get home safely and avoid the possibility of being arrested for DUI.

For instance, AAA offered its services to people who had too much to drink on Cinco de Mayo during the 12-hour period from 6 p.m. on Monday, May 5, through 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6. The vehicle and as many occupants as can ride safely in the tow truck were taken home — free of charge. People who enjoyed the holiday’s festivities and used the service avoided the dangers of drinking and driving, and AAA earned some free goodwill within Utah’s communities.

In 2012, one out of every 165 licensed drivers in the United States was arrested for driving under the influence, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Many people may not realize they could be legally impaired when they get behind the wheel after even one drink. Even if an impaired driver does not become involved in a serious or deadly accident, drinking and driving can be expensive. In Utah alone, the AAA says that the monetary impact of a conviction for DUI can cost upwards of $12,000 in fines and penalties, legal fees and restitution.

Being arrested for DUI can be frightening. In addition to the potential financial losses, an individual can lose his or her license. A criminal conviction could result in a prison term. Anyone facing criminal charges for driving under the influence may benefit from learning about his or her rights and obtaining assistance with getting through such a trying time.
