Utah mom died in 7 car crash said to be DUI-related

On Behalf of | May 16, 2014 | DUI

As with most Utah parents of children with extracurricular activities, a 43-year-old mom was driving her daughter home after soccer practice one day recently. She had no way of knowing that she would be involved in a car crash on her way home that would take her life. Police believe the accident, which ultimately involved seven vehicles, was DUI-related.

According to preliminary reports, a man in a pickup truck failed to stop at a red light. As he drove through the intersection without stopping, he set off the accident. The woman’s 13-year-old daughter suffered injuries that were described as non-life threatening and was taken to an area hospital.

No information was given regarding any other injuries aside from the pickup truck driver himself. He suffered injuries only described as major and is reportedly still hospitalized in an unknown condition. Authorities believe the man was impaired at the time of the crash. It was announced that he would be taken into custody for driving under the influence, vehicular homicide and reckless driving when he is released from the hospital.

At present, he is only suspected of being impaired at the time of the crash. It will be up to Utah prosecutors to prove to the court beyond a reasonable doubt that he is guilty of DUI and the other charges against him. Fortunately, he will have an opportunity to refute the accusations. Once he and his criminal defense team have reviewed the evidence in the hands of prosecutors, an appropriate defense strategy can be determined.
