Utah divorce: Family has been in court for a decade

On Behalf of | Sep 11, 2013 | Divorce

Utah readers may be surprised to know that even the judge presiding over the case can’t seem to get this couple to get along long enough to finalize the leftover issues from their divorce. It has now been nearly 10 years since the divorce was filed, and the parties are still battling. The major point of contention has to do with child visitation.

The divorce was granted back in 2005, and the woman’s estranged husband has not seen his children in nearly four years. Back in January, there was some therapy ordered for the father and his twins. Court documents allege that the mother has refused to make the children available. He also alleges that she lies to authorities about him and purposely keeps the children away from him.

Of course, there are two sides to every story. The wife says that her ex-husband does what he can to ruin her reputation. She also claims that he once hit her. She remarried, and in Jan. 2009, took part in an SEC investigation against her ex-husband regarding insider trading. She was given a reward of $1 million for her part in the investigation.

There have been somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 motions, rulings and other court documents filed in this divorce. Luckily, not all divorces become this contentious. Most Utah couples are, at some point, able to move past their differences and stop fighting. Often, the judges, mediators, attorneys and other professionals involved in a divorce case are able to help the parties reach this goal. It can be particularly important to put aside personal issues when there are children involved.
