Telling the kids about divorce over dinner

On Behalf of | Dec 17, 2019 | Divorce

When wanting to end a marriage, many people worry about how they will break the news to their spouse. However, it can be just as difficult to break the news to their children. As a result, it is important for Utah parents who are getting a divorce to approach the topic gently with their children.

One way that parents can tell their children about a divorce is by doing it over dinner. Both parents can sit down with the kids and tell them what is going to happen. This method gives the children the opportunity to ask questions to both parents and express their feelings with the entire family. It may be difficult, but if both parents remain calm and civil, they may be better able to help their children through this discussion.

Of course, when telling the kids about the divorce, it is important not to say that it is the fault of one parent or the other. In fact, it is typically better to leave the details regarding the reasons for the divorce out of the conversation. Even if the marriage is ending on bad terms, it is not beneficial to put the children in the middle or force them to choose one parent over the other.

If parents can remain civil and discuss their divorce with their children as a team, this may bode well for future child custody arrangements. Being able to work together could allow the children to maintain healthy relationships with both parents and possibly set the foundation for an amicable joint custody arrangement. Still, it is important for Utah parents to thoroughly assess the details of their families and determine which custody options may be best for their unique circumstances.
